DIAGNOSING DEMENTIA

Dementia-related issues would be evaluated by undergoing a  cognitive function test in which a physician will test one’s memory and language skills as an indicator of further neuropsychological testing (Mayo Clinic, 2014).

Neurological evaluation is important in diagnosing dementia because there may be other causes for dementia other than Alzheimer’s disease (Mayo Clinic, 2014).

Laboratory testing may be performed to rule out endocrine disease, abnormal medication levels within the blood stream, or abnormal blood count levels indicating a total different disease than Alzheimer’s disease (Mayo Clinic, 2014).

Brain scans can detect the chemical activity within the brain by visual observance of hyperfusion in the bilateral , biparietal or bitemporal regions of the structural architect of the brain through a PET scan or single photon emission computed tomography scan (SPECT) (Bryan, 2014. Para. 1 & 2).
